The Latest in Fashion

The rich cultural heritage of Manipur and Meghalaya took centre stage at Delhi Fashion Week 2026, as vibrant cultural presentations captivated audiences at ITPO, Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, celebrating the artistic traditions, identity and cultural richness of Northeast India.

Held on 27 August 2026 as part of Film Expo India, Delhi Fashion Week 2026 brought together fashion, handloom, Khadi, culture, women’s empowerment and traditional craftsmanship under the theme “Naari Shakti – Weaving Viksit Bharat.”

A major attraction of the event was International Reinvent Northeast – Season 8, a special fashion and cultural showcase dedicated to the designers, weavers, artisans, entrepreneurs, textiles, performing arts and cultural heritage of Northeast India.

Manipuri Dance Brings Meitei Culture to the National Stage
One of the most memorable moments of the Northeast showcase was a special Manipuri dance performance by artists from Manipur, bringing the grace, rhythm and distinctive artistic traditions of the state to one of New Delhi’s most prominent exhibition venues.

The performance showcased the beauty of Meitei cultural heritage and added a powerful performing-arts dimension to the fashion presentation.

The appearance of Manipur at Bharat Mandapam demonstrated how traditional performing arts can find new audiences when presented alongside contemporary fashion and creative industries.

It also highlighted the importance of giving India’s Northeast a stronger presence on national platforms, where its diverse cultures, textiles and artistic traditions can be experienced by audiences from across the country.

Meghalaya’s Ryndia Silk Adds Distinctive Elegance to the Showcase
Meghalaya also made a strong impression at Delhi Fashion Week 2026 through its presentation of traditional textiles and contemporary design.

The Meghalaya presentation featured designer Batkyntilin Mawthou from Shillong and weaver Iaineh from Ri-Bhoi, showcasing contemporary designs created with traditional Ryndia silk. The collection highlighted the artistic heritage of the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia communities.

The use of Ryndia silk reflected Meghalaya’s rich weaving traditions while demonstrating how indigenous textiles can be adapted for modern fashion.

Traditional Northeast textiles, including Eri Silk, were also presented on the runway through garments associated with NEHHDC’s Purbashree brand.

Together, the presentations from Manipur and Meghalaya created a compelling combination of performing arts, handloom traditions and contemporary fashion.

Manipur and Meghalaya’s Cultural Heritage Meets Contemporary Fashion
The Manipur and Meghalaya presentations formed part of the larger International Reinvent Northeast – Season 8, which sought to bring the cultural and creative wealth of Northeast India to the national fashion and entertainment landscape.

The showcase featured representations of the Seven Sister states, traditional costumes, indigenous textiles, Northeast weavers and cultural traditions, creating a visual celebration of the region’s diversity.

Within this larger presentation, Manipur stood out through its distinctive cultural identity and powerful expression of performing arts, while Meghalaya highlighted the beauty and versatility of its traditional silk textiles.

The initiative demonstrated that fashion is not only about clothing—it can also become a platform for cultural storytelling, heritage preservation and economic opportunity.

Delhi Fashion Week 2026 Celebrates Northeast India
Delhi Fashion Week 2026 was organised by Delhi Fashion Club in collaboration with Film Expo India, in association with NEHHDC, and executed by VOY Media & Events. The show was directed by Harshit Dhingaun, Celebrity Fashion Director, Chairman of Delhi Fashion Club and Founder of Delhi Fashion Week.

The event brought together designers, fashion students, models, weavers, cultural performers, celebrities, influencers and professionals from different parts of India.

The central theme, “Naari Shakti – Weaving Viksit Bharat,” focused on women’s empowerment while promoting Indian handlooms, Khadi, indigenous craftsmanship and cultural diversity.

The Northeast segment expanded this vision by creating a dedicated platform for the region’s cultural and creative communities.

A New Platform for Northeast Culture
International Reinvent Northeast – Season 8 was supported and sponsored by NEHHDC, with support from the Northeast Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India.

The initiative highlighted the potential of Northeast India’s designers, weavers, artisans, entrepreneurs, indigenous products and cultural tourism.

For Manipur and Meghalaya, participation in Delhi Fashion Week provided an opportunity to present their cultural identities to a national audience in a modern and engaging format.

Harshit Dhingaun’s Vision: Fashion as a Bridge to Culture

Speaking about the wider vision behind the presentation, Harshit Dhingaun, Chairman of Delhi Fashion Club and Founder of Delhi Fashion Week, has consistently worked to bring fashion, culture, tourism and Northeast India’s creative communities into the national spotlight.

His vision for International Reinvent Northeast is to create a bridge between India’s traditional cultural heritage and contemporary fashion, allowing indigenous textiles, artists, designers and cultural performers to reach new audiences.

The Delhi Fashion Week platform therefore became more than a fashion runway—it became a space for cultural representation, national integration and celebration of India’s diversity.

Manipur and Meghalaya Shine at Bharat Mandapam
The appearance of Manipur and Meghalaya at Delhi Fashion Week 2026 was a celebration of identity, heritage and artistic expression.

From the elegance of Manipuri dance and the richness of Meitei culture to the refined beauty of Meghalaya’s Ryndia silk, the event demonstrated the extraordinary cultural wealth of Northeast India.

The message from Bharat Mandapam was clear:

India’s fashion future can be strengthened by preserving and celebrating its cultural roots.

And as the cultural traditions of Manipur and Meghalaya resonated through the halls of Bharat Mandapam, the two states added another powerful chapter to the story of Northeast India on the national fashion stage.
