Born Jelena Jakovljevic in the city of Zabalj, formerly Yugoslavia (now Serbia), she was crowned Miss Yugoslavia in 1998, launching a 15-year modeling career that took her to runways for brands like Motorola, Valentino, Dior, and Christian Lacroix. But modeling was only the beginning. After relocating to Dubai in 2001, Jelena transitioned from the spotlight to the design studio, founding her couture fashion label Duchess by Jelena in 2012.
Now a celebrated fashion designer in the UAE, Jelena also juggles several other ventures — including beauty salons (Vanilla & Chocolate by Jelena, milK&HONEY), a five-star nursery (Asya’s Nursery), a multi-speciality medical clinic (Al Das Medical Clinic), and a recruitment agency (IRS International). Her path reflects a deep-seated passion for design and a sharp entrepreneurial instinct.
“My collections are for the modern woman who craves standout pieces — ones that blend couture craftsmanship with everyday versatility,” Jelena shares, poised in one of her own creations. “I wanted to design for women like myself — busy, style-conscious, and unwilling to compromise on elegance.”
Her brand, Duchess by Jelena, is distinguished by flowing silhouettes, delicate corsetry, sequined embroidery, and rich monochrome palettes — often in lace, chiffon, and metallic finishes. Drawing inspiration from Dubai’s skyscrapers, desert sunsets, and coastal lines, her designs reflect a fusion of European heritage and Middle Eastern aesthetics.
Blending Cultures and Empowering Women
Jelena describes her style philosophy as a marriage of femininity and elegance, greatly influenced by Middle Eastern fashion and her Arab family. “There’s such glamour here, and yet such thoughtfulness about modesty. I wanted my label to reflect that balance — Western roots blended with regional inspiration.”
She credits her upbringing during the tumultuous 1990s Yugoslav wars as a formative experience. Raised by teacher parents, Jelena was encouraged to pursue academics, earning degrees in architecture, business, economics, and diplomacy — all of which laid the foundation for her success in the UAE.
“When I left modeling, I had no regrets,” she says. “That career gave me resilience, industry insight, and a sense of global style. Launching my label was a natural next step — I could finally design for women I understood.”
Fashion, she explains, is a challenging business in the UAE — a market saturated with luxury. But local designers are finding space as discerning consumers seek unique, homegrown brands that stand apart from mainstream couture.
A Recognized Style Icon
Jelena’s work and influence haven’t gone unnoticed. She’s been nominated for Emirates Woman of the Year, recognized among the Top 12 Stylish Women in the UAE, and shortlisted for the Middle East Admirable Woman Entrepreneur Award.
“Recognition means a lot because I’ve poured years into these businesses. I’m involved in every detail. My teams know it’s not unusual to receive a 11pm email from me,” she laughs.
Timeless Style, Thoughtful Design
Inspiration for her collections spans from Georgina Chapman of Marchesa to Kate Middleton, whom Jelena admires for balancing elegance with modernity. She also reveres old Hollywood icons like Grace Kelly, whose understated style continues to influence her designs — cinched waists, A-line gowns, regal necklines, and an aura of sophistication.
“Fashion should enhance your essence, not overshadow it,” she says. “The most beautiful women are those who are at ease with themselves. Dress for you — not for the trends.”
For her, every wardrobe needs a pencil skirt, a maxi dress, a statement necklace, a well-fitted pair of jeans, and, of course, stilettos.

Duchess by Jelena is more than a label; it’s a statement of refined glamour for women from the East and West alike. “Women want to feel beautiful in a tasteful, graceful way,” she concludes. “Designers have the responsibility to deliver sensuality with class — and that’s the essence of what I try to create.”
