Chanel Le19M to Showcase Exhibition in Dakar, Senegal

Chanel’s Le19M, the Maison’s dedicated craftsmanship hub, is set to launch an inspiring three-month international program in Dakar, Senegal. This initiative follows Chanel’s recent showcase of its Métiers d’Art collection in the vibrant capital, further solidifying the brand’s connection to Senegal’s rich artisanal heritage.

In collaboration with the Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire (IFAN), Le19M will transform the renowned Musée Théodore-Monod d’art africain into an off-site gallery, hosting a program that celebrates the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art.

“Sur le Fil”: A Tribute to Senegalese Craftsmanship

The centerpiece of the program is the exhibition titled “Sur le fil” (On the Thread), which highlights the diversity and richness of Senegalese embroidery and weaving traditions. The exhibition seamlessly blends these crafts with other artistic disciplines, including painting, photography, and installation art, showcasing the nation’s creative wealth and the profound humanistic values embedded in its artisanal practices.

“Sur le fil” will feature works and installations by contemporary textile artists, some of whom have collaborated with Le19M’s prestigious Maisons d’art. The exhibition will also come alive with live demonstrations, as dozens of skilled artisans create new pieces in real time. Guest artists will lead participatory workshops, offering visitors an immersive and interactive experience.

Empowering Communities and Inspiring Creativity

This initiative aims to achieve several important goals. First, it seeks to celebrate and preserve the artisanal skills that have been passed down through generations, reaffirming their cultural and artistic value. By showcasing these crafts, Le19M hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for traditional techniques within Senegalese society and beyond.

Second, the program is designed to inspire future generations. Through workshops and demonstrations, Le19M aims to spark creativity and vocational interest among young people, students, and the general public, encouraging them to explore their own artistic potential.

A Commitment to Artisanal Excellence

Chanel’s initiative in Dakar underscores the Maison’s dedication to preserving and promoting artisanal craftsmanship. By collaborating with local communities and celebrating Senegal’s unique cultural heritage, Le19M demonstrates its commitment to nurturing creativity and supporting the next generation of artisans.

This program is a testament to the power of fashion and craftsmanship as tools for cultural exchange and empowerment. As Chanel continues to champion artisanal excellence, its efforts in Dakar serve as a shining example of how luxury brands can contribute to the preservation and evolution of traditional crafts.
