Francesca Planeta Receives 2024 Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award

Her love for the Sicilian landscape is as deep as the sea surrounding the island. Her vision is as modern, innovative, and "volcanic" as Mount Etna, Sicily’s other soul. Her passion and pioneering spirit echo her father Diego Planeta’s legacy. Alongside her cousins Alessio and Santi Planeta, and supported by her family and dedicated team, Francesca Planeta has been instrumental in the Sicilian wine renaissance. She has elevated the family business while respecting local traditions, crafting a unique visual narrative that symbolizes excellence in both the Italian and international wine industries.

Recently, Francesca Planeta was honored with the prestigious “Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement” at the ADI Design Museum in Milan. This award, the oldest and most esteemed design accolade globally, was established in 1954 by Gio Ponti to recognize excellence in design and production. The recognition celebrates her career and her significant contributions to "designing" the Made in Italy food design sector, highlighting how design can powerfully narrate and enhance the culture and history of a region.

The 2024 Compasso d’Oro ADI awards, now in their 28th edition, were presented by Luciano Galimberti, president of ADI; Umberto Cabini, president of the ADI Collezione Compasso d’Oro Foundation; Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy Region; and Giuseppe Sala, mayor of Milan, with the support of the Ministries of Business and Made in Italy, Foreign Affairs, and Culture. The awards honored 20 products and 11 individuals with the “Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement,” including prominent figures like Paola Antonelli, Umberto Cassina, and Rei Kawakubo. Additionally, 39 Honorable Mentions were given, and the Targa Giovani award recognized student projects from Italian design universities. The awarded products will be featured in the Compasso d’Oro Collection at the ADI Design Museum’s permanent exhibition.

Francesca Planeta shared, “My vision of design is deeply connected to the beauty of Sicily, an endless source of inspiration due to its cultural richness and natural resources. The landscape's nuances are reflected in the shapes and colors we use, creating a natural bond with the territory. By blending artisan tradition with contemporary creativity, we create spaces that tell stories of life and authenticity, where every detail pays homage to the island's rich heritage and narrates a tale of beauty and passion.”

A descendant of a family with a long tradition in Sicilian agriculture and the daughter of one of Italy’s wine pioneers, Diego Planeta, Francesca holds two Masters in Corporate Communication from London and Milan. She joined the family winery in 1995, contributing to the international success of Sicilian wines and developing a hospitality network across Sicily. As president of Planeta Estate, she has expanded the company’s real estate and hospitality ventures, opening La Foresteria in Menfi (Agrigento) in 2009, converting part of the family palace in Palermo into a public residence in 2017, launching the Insula Beach Club in Menfi in 2023, and inaugurating the La Segreta Country House residence in 2024.

She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Leonardo Committee, UIV-Unione Italiana Vino, and Le Soste di Ulisse. This award comes shortly after La Foresteria Planeta received a “key” from the Michelin Italy Guide, recognizing it among the most exceptional stays. The jury praised Francesca’s career as a blend of coherence and visionary perspective in a traditionally conservative sector, affirming her contributions as exemplary of the best principles of Made in Italy food design.
