Heba Thorisdottir: A Cinematic Odyssey through the World of Makeup Artistry

The spotlight of the entertainment world recently shone brightly on the Coronado Island Film Festival during the Leonard Maltin Industry Tribute Awards at Loews Coronado Bay resmong the five distinguished honorees was the iconic Hollywood makeup artist, Heba Thorisdottir. This star-studded event, attended by celebrities like Jane Seymour, celebrated

In an exclusive red-carpet interview, I had the privilege of conversing with Heba Thorisdottir, an Icelandic-born artist based in Los Angeles. She graciously shared her journey, revealing how she became Quentin Tarantino's trusted makeup artist and her start in Hollywood's iconic film projects. With over 35 years in the industry, Heba's illustrious career boasts not only collaborations with Quentin Tarantino but also serving as the personal makeup artist to Hollywood's elite, including Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson, and Lucy Liu to name a few.

Heba's favorite project, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Having contributed to multiple Tarantino films, such as "Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2," "Inglourious Basterds," and "Django Unchained," she expressed admiration for Tarantino's artistry. "I love seeing him as an artist, he is an amazing filmmaker and just love how he just ties everything together," she reflected on her collaboration with the renowned director.

Heba's journey into the world of celebrity makeup artistry began unexpectedly. Attending a makeup school in Los Angeles, she found her way into the industry through her brother-in-law, a budding music video producer. “I went to a makeup school here in Los Angeles. My brother-in-law was just starting as a producer in the business of music videos, and he hired me”. Starting with humble tasks like making sandwiches and coffee. “By the time I was coming out of school I never went to my last test because I was already working”. Heba's dedication and talent propelled her into the heart of Hollywood.

 Advice for Aspiring Makeup Artists:

For aspiring makeup artists dreaming of a Hollywood career, Heba's advice is grounded in practicality. She recommends attending film school in your city and collaborating with graduate students, emphasizing the importance of networking. "Those are the people who will take you with them. That is the easier way to get in rather than to walk into a production office where nobody knows you," she wisely advises.

From Sandwiches to Stardom:

Heba's journey from not knowing how to do her own makeup to working on iconic projects with Quentin Tarantino is a testament to her passion and talent. "I didn't even know how to do my own makeup. Now I work as a makeup artist for Quentin Tarantino," she proudly declares. Her overarching advice to those pursuing a career in the arts is simple yet profound: "Study something you love. You will be successful."

The pinnacle of the night was Heba Thorisdottir receiving the Industry Tribute award for her significant contribution to the world of art and film. Other distinguished honorees that evening included Dianne Ladd, British Academy Award and Golden Globe award winning actress for the legacy award honoree. Carol Guzy, four-time Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, humanitarian award honoree. Paul Raci, Academy award Nominated actor, industry impact award honoree. Andreas Deja, Disney animator and Leonard Maltin Award Honoree. Each recognized for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields.

Heba Thorisdottir's journey from making sandwiches on film sets to being honored alongside industry legends is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. As the curtain falls on another remarkable event at the Coronado Island Film Festival, Heba's story stands as an inspiration for aspiring artists, reminding us that behind every iconic film, there are often unsung heroes like Heba, shaping the magic that unfolds on the silver screen.
